Texts give the maximum magnitudes as around −4.7, but calculations here are as high as −4.9, but there is problems with the phases and distance against theory. Alternative calculations using different models are 0.2 less than those quoted here. I have not be able to ascertain the cause of the anomalies here, though for most visual observers such differences make little consequence. I.e. Venus is normally observable in daylight hours, so magnitudes are not important compared with other planets or stars. Secondly, Venus at night is always reasonably close to the horizon and suffers greatly from the effects of atmospheric absorption and haze.
